Apparently, Coils crossed the 20k views mark on Royal Road sometime recently. Shows you how busy I've been that I missed it. Still sitting at 4.2 stars (out of 5).

Coils of the Serpent | Royal Road

The job was simple: find out why the barges had stopped coming down the river. Surely a group of war veterans could see to that, and have a few laughs along the way. But why had the baron prevented his own people from investigating? And why did their captain insist they journey covertly? Finding out the truth might cost them everything.

2024-06-28 - Do you include inside jokes for friends or fan groups in your stories?

About half-way through Coils of the Serpent, there is a dance that is something of an inside joke - at least to someone of my generation.

In the final chapter, there is also a pretty shameful (and overused) anachronistic cultural reference. I was getting desperate at the time. I'd already delayed that chapter a week.

In comparison, it’s not much, but recently my novel Coils of the Serpent crossed the 10,000 views mark on Royal Road. The more popular works receive that many in a day, but it is almost two years to the day since I posted the first chapter there. Add in the few thousand views the novel has received on other sites (plus the three views it got on Wattpad before I deleted it), and that’s a substantial number of readers. Far more than I expected when I began.

She placed the folded blanket over the top of the palisade, then levered herself up. The blanket protected her from the sharp points as she straddle the stake wall.

“Give me you hand,” she said offering her own.

“I can’t do this,” Falduin complained.

Clearly he hadn’t been tamed enough.

“You can, and you will,” she told him.

“I’m soaking, and covered in-“

“Falduin. Do I need to introduce you to Captain Knife again?”

He glared at her, then reluctantly offered his hand.

She flipped the garment around to show Ganthe, “What do you see?”

“An eagle?” he said. “Did you draw that?”

“I most certainly did not!” she spat.

“Then who did?”

Lera’s pointed gaze fell upon the still-sleeping form of Falduin.

She was livid. She prodded Falduin with her foot, “Did you do this?” she snarled, holding up the surcoat before him.

Falduin turned to face her, eyes blinking, but still unseeing.

“Did you do this?” she repeated.

“What?” he asked.

“This. Did you do this?”

He blinked at her, “Do what?”

“This!” She specifically pointed at the eagle so he couldn’t be mistaken what she was talking about.

“What?”

“This is not funny, Falduin. This garment is very important to me. It symbolises much that I hold dear. You had better hope that this, what ever you did to it, washes out.”

“I can’t draw,” he said.

“You don’t need to draw. You can use your magic.”

“No,” he said standing. He pointed at the eagle, “To do anything like this - and I can’t even conceive how that might be done - I would need to be able to draw. Even a full-fledged wizard can’t just magic up something from nothing. Very well, they can but it is extremely difficult, and have no such skill.”

“Then how did this happen? It was white when I packed it away last night, this morning it’s like this.”

“Lera,” it was Heric.

“What?” she said not taking her gaze off Falduin. She was certain it must be his doing.

“Lera, you’re forgetting one possibility,” Heric said. He reached out and cradled the fore-cloth in his hands, almost reverently.

“What?”

“It is a wonder,” he said smiling at her. “A blessing. For helping the griffon pass over. From The Gods.”

“The Gods can draw better than this. Plus they do not bless someone like me.”

“Why not?”

“I have been cast from my order. I am no longer a Sister of Axiom.”

“You are still a Priestess of Úlæ.”

“Nominally.”

“ Úlæ is sending you a message.”

“What message? Why?”

Ifonsa joined Heric appraising the surcoat. “It looks a little like those worn by The Eagle Knights,” she said. “Perhaps you are supposed to start a new order. Armed and armoured priestesses. The Sisters of Lera.”

From the too much information department...

The excerpt I posted last night (about the Griffon) came about because my eldest child asked me to include our cat in my novel.

“Lower your bow,” Lera told Ifonsa. “You’re scaring it.”
“Good. It scares the willies out of me,” Ifonsa said.
“It’s about to die. Let it pass gracefully. Lower your bow.”
Ifonsa cautiously slackened the string, and lowered the bow. She moved to join Lera as she returned the arrow to its quiver.
The stench from the griffon’s rotting wing and vacant eye almost turned Ifonsa’s stomach. The wounds were weeks old, and had never fully healed.
The griffon shifted its remaining eye to regard her. Tears leaked from its duct, rolling down its feathers.
“It was hungry, that is all,” Lera said. “It was injured and could no longer hunt properly.”
Ifonsa realised why the valley had felt so odd. “It hunted this area out.”
“Yes. I think it has been here a long time.”
“Are you going to heal it?”
“No. It is too injured, and the gift of life is beyond my power.”
“What are you going to do?”
“Offer it comfort and guide its soul to the heavens.”
“Soul?”
“Of course, all eagles have souls.”
Then Lera closed her eyes, and softly she began to chant. Ifonsa did not understand the words, but the song was filled with sadness, loss, and lament, but also hope. She felt tears running down her cheeks, but she did not brush them away.
“There. It is done,” Lera said standing. “Not let’s see how Ganthe is.”
Lera left Ifonsa staring at the dead griffon, it’s lifeless pale-blue eye staring back at her.

A story: Eighteen months ago when I was writing Coils, my eldest son asked me to include our cat in the novel. I warned him that he might not like the end result, but he insisted anyway.

I adore our cat. She's annoying AF, but she is the perfect foil for our family.

That said, it is unwise to antagonise a writer.
