so much desire for "efficiency" in capitalism prioritizes standardization and consolidation while completely ignoring the negative effects of monocultures, i.e.:
- the internet is really 3 cloud providers in a trenchcoat
- whatsapp is a single messaging service with 3 billion phone numbers collected to get stolen
- there are only two kinds of smart phones, iphones and androids
even when focusing on reasons other than preventing monopolies, standardization is good when it comes to interoperability but consolidation is disastrous when it comes to goods, services and choice
this is why a bunch of random mom & pop bakeries are better than paneras or starbucks everywhere. maybe one of those bakeries are low quality... they'll get weeded out eventually. but if the dominant chain restaurant source their ingredients from the same place to save costs or reduce complexity, they're creating a monoculture where any disaster is amplified. this happened to chipotle with e.coli but chipotle was doing nothing different than any other anticompetitive monopoly-seeking capitalist greed machine company
this is not an inevitable outcome
laws allow for this kind of ugly cancer of monocultures of choice to form and laws can prevent this too
but no politician who has not declared unfettered capitalism as the enemy will ever pass a law like this because consumer choice is antithetical to the highest profits possible, the same way that you can pay young children a lot less, or nothing at all except threats of force, to mine your coal.
