While shielding like in Star Trek exists it's not at the same level, useful against things like radiation or projectile to a lesser degree it's main attribute is to withstand Energy beams or plasma. The most costing defense system is a set of combined projection devices that creat localized points of plasma "bubbles" that destroy incoming projectiles. Of course without sophisticated AI support or a really damn good brain linked person this system would be useless.

My ship the Ghoz'Tarc has a cloaking device akin to a chameleon skin, it's outer hull can mimic patterns that blend in with the cosmic background. While it's energy is contained like the heat in MassEffects Normandy. About thinking of combat like in Star Trek against "invisible" ships I often asked myself why they don't blind fire the area especially in the TOS/ENT or DIS era. I think the main reason is that the UFP & Starfleet are always try to be pacifistic/defending not the aggressor, to a point that they have a tactical disadvantage. I guess in my verse I will make it a resource decision. While it is possible like in ST to reshape matter this depends on space & production capabilities which is more limited/time incentive on a smaller craft like the Ghoz'Tarc.
While beam weapons are loosing efficiency over longer distances, projectileles need to be supplied, this making blind fire less useful.๐ค
