The World Is Studded With Artificial Mountains
They’re fake, but they can be spectacular (and hazardous).

[As I was reading this article I was thinking about Rome’s Monte Testaccio, an “artificial mound[s] in Rome composed almost entirely of testae, fragments of broken ancient Roman pottery, nearly all discarded amphorae [mainly for imported olive oil] dating from the time of the Roman Empire…”: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monte_Testaccio]

#Cement made with iron #slag has been widely used since decades. For example type IIIC have 83-95% of slag content. Slag cements yet have a very slow setting time. We'll see if they really get actual #clinker (Portland cement is a mix of clinker, gypsum and usually limestone)

🚨NEW STUDY🚨

Wondering about the waterbed effects of long-term #decarbonization pathways for the #clinker and #cement #industry? Amelie Müller et al. got you covered in a new study on coupling IMAGE with premise in Journal of Cleaner Production:

Subsurface coal naturally burns in some places, like here on Smoky Mountain (!) in the Kaiparowits Plateau, Utah, forming huge apparently bottomless fissures belching fumes (left), and vast landscapes of baked red clinker from ancient underground coal fires (distance). How ancient? Hmmm... #clinker #geology #Kaiparowits #smokymountainroad

The #medieval seal of #Shoreham in Sussex refers to the town as Hulkesmouth, after the #ship type depicted, a hulc.

Wonderful discussion of the many images & archaeological hopes from the #NewportShip project:

I haven't seen details of the #clinker #hull of the #13thCentury #MortarWreck in #Dorset; #MedievalMastodon is it a hulc?

In this morning’s post: #Dorset Natural History & Archaeological Society Magazine, no. 5 (winter 2022) - including an article on the 13th century #MortarWreck discovered in #StudlandBay #Dorset. The #clinker-built #ship was constructed from Irish timber (felled 1242-1262) and was carrying #Purbeck #GraveSlabs, building rubble, and mortars, as well as the what appears to be the crew’s cooking pots. #MaritimeHistory #Wrecks #MedievalShips #MaritimeTrade #DNHAS
