@andrewdessler Just to be clear, is this all in re USA and the Trump regime? #climatesciencedenial

Baby tosses binky.

"The world’s nations convened this week in Hangzhou, China, to plan the next major international assessment of climate science—but without the United States. Late last week, President Donald Trump’s administration denied officials permission to travel to the meeting and cut off a technical support contract for the report, the seventh assessment of the United Nations’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)."

For a very long time I have been arguing that the ruling class establishment in the Pig Empire has known about fossil fuel induced climate crisis for decades, and to prove it I usually point to the reports every President from Kennedy onward has received when taking office, the comprehensive studies conducted in the Sixties by fossil fuel executives, and the information provided to the investor class about what climate change means for their financial futures over the past forty to fifty years. And every time I brought this up, older and wiser lefties than myself have repeatedly told me that even this overstates how successful folks in power have been in keeping this a "secret" because information about climate crisis and the fossil fuel consumption that causes it has been leaking out into the public sphere on the regular that entire time. Unfortunately, because it wasn't my area of expertise, I typically dismissed these observations as folks overstating the impact of environmental protection movements in the Pig Empire. Well, as it turns out, the greater fool is me because those older and wiser lefties were right.

The lost history of what Americans knew about climate change in the 1960s

"Ominous warnings of climate change had also reached the wider public. In 1958, Frank Capra, the famous filmmaker, produced an animated movie, The Unchained Goddess, that warned that just a few degrees of temperature rise could cause the seas to rise, so that tourists in glass-bottom boats would one day see “the drowned towers of Miami through 150 feet of tropical water.” It was shown to almost 5 million children in classrooms across the country. On The Merv Griffin Show in 1969, Americans were warned that a rapidly heating Earth could melt the polar ice caps. The next year, an article in Sports Illustrated, a magazine seemingly far-removed from environmental concerns, explained the science of climate change in detail, advising people “not to take 99-year leases on properties at present sea level.”

Although I've focused on the reality that awareness of the climate crisis and its causes was objectively a public discussion as far back as the 1960's, the rest of this article discusses the open but "forgotten" evidence that it was very much on the mind of American legislators during that period too. This in turn exposes longstanding court decisions, and the American political right's argument that climate change was not part of the government's purview when departments like the EPA were created, as a series of poorly concealed lies; to say nothing of the now 60 year old (at least) campaign to institutionally "memory hole" what we already knew about fossil fuel induced climate crisis in our broader society - a quest we now know fossil fuel companies and right wing think tanks actively paid to achieve over that same time period.

All in all, it is clear that fossil fuel induced climate crisis and the fact that our government has done nothing to stop it, is effectively a criminal conspiracy built around selective amnesia; and that *open* conspiracy reaches the highest levels in our society and has many, many fathers in American political life.

PS: hat tip to the reader who shared this article with me last week; you've confirmed something I've long had suspicions about but lacked the citations to prove and for that I am grateful.

It wasn't just scientists who were worried, but Congress, the White House, and even Sports Illustrated, newly unearthed documents show.

Whether by accident or design a certain flavor of #ClimateScienceDenial centers on semantic niceties.

Maybe no better example than "ocean acidification." The term "acidification" is a neutral (!) expression of falling pH-- from any starting level. #ClimateMyth enthusiasts would like us to believe this term of movement on a continuum to be hyperbole. It isn't; it's only an expression of direction.

Here's our 150-word treatment, in collaboration with #GigaFact.

Know a climate science denier? An elliptical way to have a meaningful conversation about that might be to partner and do this course.

2023 self-paced run of Denial101x starts on February 7

The next iteration of our free online course, Making Sense of Climate Science Denial, starts on February 7 2023 and it will be the 16th run since the very first one in April 2015. Since then, more than 42,000 students from over 180 countries have registered for our MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) which has been running either as a 7 weeks long paced or - more often - a longer running self-paced version like the upcoming one. The next run will be available for almost 13 months until end of February 2024, giving you ample time to work through the material at your own pace.
