A new Clickspring video of his recreation of the Antikythera mechanism has arrived. He discusses the construction tradeoffs for the ancient builders while constructing a replica of the lunar phase mechanism using recreations of tools that might plausibly have bee used.
For those who don't follow him, Clickspring is working with a team of academics and they have produced at least one paper relating to a discovery during the construction process.

Back into the 'maybe later' queue. #HobbyMachining

Being a fan of #Clickspring, part of me would very much like a lathe and a mini-mill, of arguably good quality, and at a reasonable price. I'm not 'beholden' to buying american made, but let's skip the budget Chinees machines, thank you.

I have an e-bay search standing open for a Sherline lathe, 3.5x8 size is fine. "For parts" is acceptable. But my budget says under $500 USD. And the market says, nope, we want $600 or more. So, later.

@zxguesser you need to DROP EVERYTHING and produce a long series of videos like that #Clickspring dude did for his home made #Antikythera mechanism! https://www.youtube.com/@Clickspring

@gutenberg_org That discovery has given me untold hours of reading (and since #clickspring, watching) on the topic over the years.

Such fertile ground for the imagination, pondering the origins, uses and the ancient technologies that have been discovered, lost and discovered again who knows how many times!

So I decided to look up shellac after watching a few videos by youtube craftsmen #clickspring. He often uses it in many of his projects. Shellac is such a versitile lacquer and comes from bug excretions. So its earth friendly and can be touched up years later. If I ever need to do wood work or refinish furnature im seriously going to consider using it.
