Three things human #ChurchInterpreters can do that #AI can't.

1) Drop in brief explanations for concepts or stories that don't make sense in the language they're speaking.
2) Adapt their vocal or signing tone to make the style of the preacher or speaker work for the audience.
3) Do a live Bible translation lookup and get the equivalent translation in the language they are using.

Hello, #fedichurch, and #theology people, I have a big request. I am currently running an independent research project on how #churches are meeting the language needs of their communities (or not).

I would be really pleased if those involved in churches as leaders or congregants or #ChurchInterpreters could fill in this 5-10 minute survey, no matter what your church is doing:

https://bit.ly/Church-Lang-Survey
(opens in a Google form)

The survey explains what will happen with the results. Results will be published and will also be used to create targeted (free!) resources for churches.

Please could you also pass it on to any churches you know. I would prefer it wasn't pushed publicly on places like Instagram, Twitter and Facebook, where it could end up being stuffed by bots but Mastodon, email and stuff like Whatsapp/Telegram/Signal is totally fine.

How churches are meeting language needs

The purpose of this survey is to understand how churches are currently meeting language needs. The information gathered in this survey will be used to improve the work that churches do for people who speak different languages. For this reason, after some general questions on your church, which will remain private, the rest of your responses will be stored on public data repository but anonymous, to allow deeper ongoing research. As the information on section 2 could theoretically be used to identify the person who filled this in, this information will be handled under the General Data Protection Regulations of the United Kingdom. It will only be used to group responses to other questions and no individual set of responses will be made available to any other person or organisation. As this survey is entirely anonymous, it will not be possible to delete individual responses later. If you wish any further information, please send an email to Dr Jonathan Downie at [email protected]. Please complete all the questions presented to you. If you are happy to proceed, please click "Next" below.
