@ada personally, I default to #UbuntuLTS because I don't have time for shit, making that work well for me is cheaper and easier than subjecting myself to the #pain and #frustration of #Windows, which I can't.

OFC depending on the use-case, #KaliLinux is a good toolkit - Like #Rescatux - to get a specific task done, but oftentimes I do go about "#ChooseTheRightToolForTheJob" and I'd rather mix and match distros as need be.

@vormrodo that very much depends...

I just point out the tools that I'd recommend for said specific task, tho OFC most can be done with one or two...

That being said, there are reasons to chooe one over the other, and @zulip / #Zulip for example gas a shitton of improvements compared to #Discord like having actual control and [a search function that works as well as threading]( zulip.com/why-zulip/ )...

I'll gladly offer a case-by-case analysis in private...

That being said, #XMPP+#OMEMO is my go-to solution, so I don't disagree with you...

@[email protected] Nearly all of the things you named are also possible with XMPP only :) Except for group calling and the exchange of larger files (which depends on the server and the online status of your contact). That's easer (and in some cases safer) than setting up IRC, Zulip and else parallely to it, isn't it?

Mastodon

@mac @Rusty @ubuntu that depends heavily on the used applications.

I've seen #Solaris and #OracleLinux in #ScientificComputing and #CriticalInfrastruxture, alongside #RedHat in #Finance and #Engineering.

#Apple's #macOS is just the primary supported Platform for most #CCSS in #CreativeWork made by #Adobe, #BlackmagicDesign as well as #AVID and #Steinberg.

My favorite for the average "#TechIlliterate" Office use is #UbuntuLTS and for #Gaming it's #pop_os...

#ChooseTheRightToolForTheJob

@kitkat @jabberati @anarchopunk_girl @fla @Mer__edith @signalapp

OFC that may not be optimal for everyone and espechally Organizations where having auditable communications may be a legal requirement, but there #Zulip is a good, #FLOSS alternative to #SaaS like #Slack, #MicrosoftTeams or god forbid #Discord.

So #ChooseTheRightToolForTheJob:
- #IRC is good for #public #Chat.
- #XMPP is good for private 1:1 chats.
- #Zulip really shibes at organizations.

@peepstein Shure I could also DIY an AP, but I don't want nosy neighbours to snitch on me for having "illegally good wifi" reaching around the entire complex.

#BNetzA doesn't take #SpectrumViolations lightly nor do I want to get 3-5 digit fines for that.

In return, I've to agree with @tomlawrence that #Ubiquiti's #Routing and #VPN options for #unifi products are abysmal and sometimes even get beaten by cheap #CPE's like those from #AVM...

So "#ChooseTheRightToolForTheJob!"
