Noen konserter blir legendariske. Det ble bassisten Charles Mingus' konsert i Universitetets Aula i 1964. Det er 50 Γ₯r siden dette musikalske lynnedslaget i hovedstaden. Mingus kom til Oslo i spissen for et fabelaktig band: Johnny Coles, trompet, Clifford Jordan, tenor, Eric Dolphy, multiinstrumenter, Jaki Byard, piano, og Dannie Richmond, trommer. Utdrag fra konserten som gjerne kalles en av de stΓΈrste og mest omtalte jazzkonsertene i Norge. Introduksjon ved Knut Borge. (reprise fra 2001)

Music this morning is _Blues & Roots_ by Charlie Mingus. A great listen but also an interesting fusion of bebop and classic jazz with more avant-garde techniques. The version I am listening to has the bonus tracks

We have to distinguish between commercialising one’s output (Moody’s Mood, Getz’s Jazz Samba?) & developing the #jazz form. #MilesDavis never compromised a note despite the foray into #fusion & #jazzrock. #ManfredSchoof, once l’enfant terrible with #SteveLacy & #MalWaldron turned to pop! In many ways this is about jazz’s cultural stock! The 70s were difficult for people like #LeeKonitz & #LennieTristano, #CharlieMingus. #Pioneers. Jazz missed a beat in the #1970s.

What. A. Photo. #CharlieMingus #Quintet at the #FiveSpot (I think). Worth noting #JohnHandyIII in the middle between Mingus and Booker Ervin. #JHIII was absolutely superb on alto. Difficult to overstate how good he was. Few have heard of him. #Jazz
