Cinque mesi dopo la morte di Jane Goodall, suo nipote Merlin Van Lawick ha partecipato al forum ambientale ChangeNOW a Parigi, portando con sé qualcosa di pubblico e personale. Non era lì come sostituto della nonna, ma come qualcuno plasmato dal suo lavoro, attualmente impegnato a portare avanti la sua eredità, come riferito da Juliette Chapalain di Mongabay.
Il messaggio di Goodall è facile da fraintendere se si considera la speranza come un semplice sentimento. Per Goodall, come Van Lawick ha spiegato, la speranza era più vicina a una disciplina. Usava l’immagine di un tunnel buio con una luce alla fine. Questa luce non arrivava da sola: bisognava muoversi verso di essa, superando ostacoli. “La speranza è radicata nell’azione”, ha affermato.

Five months after the death of Jane Goodall, her nephew Merlin Van Lawick participated in the ChangeNOW environmental forum in Paris, bringing with him something public and personal. He was not there as a replacement for his grandmother, but as someone shaped by her work, currently engaged in carrying forward her legacy, as reported by Juliette Chapalain of Mongabay.
Goodall's message is easily misunderstood if hope is considered simply a feeling. For Goodall, as Van Lawick explained, hope was closer to a discipline. She used the image of a dark tunnel with a light at the end. This light did not arrive on its own: one had to move towards it, overcoming obstacles. “Hope is rooted in action,” she stated.
