Soon Nochka stopped looking for her kitten.
She refused to sleep in the basement and didn’t want to come inside to me anymore.
But whenever we met outside, she would still follow me around.

Later I found out that people were letting her spend the nights in the building entrance.
While the weather was warm, that was good enough for her.

The Tough Cat Musya

Musya had been living in our yard for a long time.
People said she’d been thrown out of a nearby house.
She trusted no one and knew better than to expect anything good from humans.

That attitude actually helped her kittens survive.
Out of the few who made it, two were hers — Dusya and Belka.
They’ll have their own stories too.

There's a tabby cat who lives on my street. She has lovely dark and light ginger and white fur.

She is very friendly. For some reason she likes me a lot. Even if she is all the way across the car park where she lives, when she sees me she will run over to me, meowing - often even sprinting. Like literally at full speed sometimes.

One time last summer, during a heatwave, she was obviously feeling too hot to run. So she saw me across the car park, got up, and instead of running just rolled around on the ground over there to say hello. Then decided that wasn't enough and trotted over anyway.

She always rubs around me, purring, until I leave; she does not get bored and wander off but makes me carry on my way and leave her. She really is very friendly.

I hadn't seen her for months. But out on my walk this morning saw a cat part way down one of the side roads. She recognised me and ran over. But she must have missed me, because she didn't just meow once or twice but just one big long meow, like literally 2-3 seconds long while she ran. It was very cute.

Obviously I blocked the pavement while stroking her, and made people walk onto the road to get past, but that's normal behaviour right?

Eventually I had to continue on my way, but she followed me a fair distance down the street before realising I was going out of her zone. But even then, she didn't turn away bored, but just stopped by somebody's gate, watching me til I went out of sight.

There's a black cat who lives in my block of flats.

Every day, his servant brings him downstairs, opens the door, puts him outside.

When he is ready to return home, he sits outside the door, waiting for a passing human. As soon as a suitable surrogate servant arrives, he gets up, and cries to be let in.

The human opens the door for him, and in he runs, tail in the air, up to the first floor landing.

But now he is blocked by the fire door. So he waits, looking longingly at the door, for the languid human to climb the stairs behind him.

Finally, the fire door is opened - just a crack, just enough for the cat to squeeze through - and he's home again.

Nobody ever knows how long he waits for passing humans, nor how long he waits for his servant to return home to actually let him back into his flat. We just do as he bids when he asks. His servant sometimes complains about how often he has to bring him downstairs because every five minutes somebody lets him back in; such is the life of being owned by a cat, I suppose.

It is fun to see how much he manipulates us into doing his bidding. Some days, he is very friendly and playful, trotting over meowing, and just wants to rub around your legs and roll on the ground in front of you having fun.

But when he wants to be let in, you can always tell - he still trots across, still meows, but you just know it's different this time - it's not casual, there's a purpose.

Sometimes when his servant is not home I sneak away and use the back door - I know he'll just be sitting for hours in a boring drab corridor and if it's a nice day out he should really be in the fresh air and sun, but I just can't say no to him. So I humiliate myself and walk all the way round the block to the back door to avoid having to refuse his demands.
