I judged The Ruins a bit too harshly when I first saw it back it upon its release. In complete fairness, that was a rough era for horror and I was skeptical of anything in the genre coming out of a studio at the time. But while it's not a perfect film, there's a lot of really good stuff in Carter Smith's directorial debut. Notably it's a viciously mean film that puts its four naive and kinda-dumb Americans on vacation through brutal paces. Jena Malone, Jonathan Tucker and Laura Ramsay are pretty great, and while he has a less interesting
