This is what renting is Melbourne is like. 19 requests to fix the leaking roof / walls over the past year and a half.
Rental agent / owner was immediately notified when it first leaked in 2021, since then I've requested it be repaired on 18 further occasions, the agent / owner has had 5 different quotes but hasn't even approved temporary repairs but has shown no sign of caring about their tenant or their investment.
I know as a renter I have rights - yes I could go to VCAT but there's a huge power imbalance - they'll likely raise the rent or ask me to move out while it's repaired (so they can raise the rent if I find somewhere else).
There's also the very real risk of being on the "bad" side of the agent / owner - they can make your life hell and just the thought of having to move is anxiety provoking.
It's extremely hard to find a decent rental at the moment - and more importantly I really liking where I am otherwise. The house is full of my stuff and it's not like I have the disposable cash at the moment.
The weekend has been spent on applying silicone to all the cracks in the balcony and railing, removing the mould, sodden plaster and re-plastering out of my pocket. I will be sending the agent the bill but I'm not looking forward to that conversation.
The imbalance of power between people that own multiple properties and people that can't afford one is ever increasing.
