EU-Autopaket: Lost in Transformation

The only useful application of e-fuels seems to be as a political lubricant. It may get the engine running again, but it voids the warranty, compromises longevity and proves to be a triple unsustainable solution.

Blockade lifted: Germany gives way on EU’s 2040 truck CO2 rules

A last-minute deal in Berlin has paved the way for the approval of the EU’s 2040 target of reducing heavy-du

Discuss anything to do with combustion technology (electricity, heating, CO2 emissions from cars and trucks, other tailpipe emissions) and you can be sure that Germany's NEIN will enter the room as this decade's version of Monty Python's Spanish Inquisition.

More on the #CO2standards for heavy-duty vehicles (🚛🚚🚌) and the attempt to water them down with the 'carbon correction factor' in this earlier thread: https://main.elk.zone/mastodon.social/@burger_jaap/111248701615811086

European Member States have agreed on the proposed CO2 rules for heavy duty vehicles, maintaining the 2030 (-45%), 2035 (-65%) and 2040 (-90%) targets. 100% zero-emission buses will come 5 years later (2035), with a target of -85% for 2030. Yes, buses are always late. https://www.consilium.europa.eu/en/press/press-releases/2023/10/16/council-agrees-on-new-rules-to-strengthen-co2-emission-standards-for-heavy-duty-vehicles/ #EV #Europe

At around noon CET today, the European Parliament plenary will vote on tightening CO2 standards for heavy duty vehicles (debate starting at 10 AM).
Attempts in committee and in the Council (Member States) to include fuel mix options in the CO2 standards were fortunately unsuccessful. See the attached post for more details.
There's still a risk that they will be introduced in plenary today.

"*May you live in interesting times *is an expression that can be interpreted as both a blessing and a curse. The regulation of Europe’s trucking sector emissions warrants the blessing of the expression well." Great piece from #ICCT's Eamonn Mulholland on the lingering threat of the carbon correction factor. The last two years of 🇪🇺 vehicle decarbonisation polices have shown that last-minute moves can water down ambitions. This morning, the ENVI committee of the European Parliament voted on their position on the proposed CO2 standards for heavy-duty vehicles - broadly aligned with the Council position, a bit more ambitious on the trailers. Also here, no support for the fuels industry push for a 'carbon correction factor'

It is important to add that this is now the negotiating position of the member states (the so-called "general approach") for the upcoming trilogue. The other two negotiating parties: European Commission 🇪🇺 (the basis is their proposal) and the Environment Committee of the European Parliament, led by Dutch Green MEP Bas Eickhout. The Parliament is expected to adopt its position next week (24 Oct).

Important finding of new #ICCT briefing on 🇪🇺 #CO2standards for cars and vans:

As the share of EVs increases, new internal combustion engine cars may actually be more polluting. I am not sure that many #EV buyers will want to allow someone else to register a large fossil SUV🦕 because of their EV🔌

"Our analysis shows that it is possible to increase the target from the -45% proposed by the Commission to -65% without danger that not enough public charging infrastructure would be available. On the contrary, leaving the Commission proposal unchanged would lead to underused infrastructure and tougher business cases for charge point operators."
