a good writeup giving some Canadian historical journalism context by Karyn Pugliese, former #Canadaland editor and one of the victims of this "sting".

Karyn S. Pugliese - How I Managed

The #Canadaland meltdown saga continues, with no response from Jesse or any of the staff.

And the pool of people watching has widened to catch several former Carymastans. 🍿

Why is he phishing former staff?

Ooo, and another!

So Jesse Brown of #Canadaland was able to gain mod access to r/Canadaland, a subreddit that he despises because people are highly critical of him.

Once he gained mod access, he used it to send accounts links to "unpublished" webpages on Canadaland with a pixel tracker installed to reveal the Reddit users IP address. So far, weird, but not really doing anything.

But! He was also sending unique webpages to journalists by email or social media so he could crossreference IP addresses to "reveal" critical accounts as journalists.

Altogether a very weird conspiratorial minded ploy.

People use VPNs and Tor, especially journalists. I'm not sure what he was trying to accomplish, but I'm guessing he was trying to create some "gotcha" podcast episode talking about journalists "working against him in the shadows on Reddit," or something.

RE: https://glammr.us/@carkner/116268383744946592

I attended the #Canadaland 2016 US election viewing party at The Gladstone Hotel in Toronto and sat down with Jesse for a chat about the state of journalism in Canada.

I pointed out not all reporters have the aptitude for business, or being an influencer, that there is a place for organized journalism as well.

He expressed what I would now call Tech Bro Views to me - journalists need to be entrepreneurs, the cream will rise to the top, competition will make everything better - which shocked me considering at the time some of his episodes had been on Robyn Doolittle and how she would not have been able to do her work on the Rob Ford Crack Video case if not for her having been at a large organization like The Star, how social media was regularly getting things wrong (and still does), etc.

It made me realize how much he's just a populist, not principled, and I don't think I've listened to an episode since.

Utterly bizarre.

Don't listen to #canadaland, don't even visit their subreddit to talk shit. Let's all just move on from that once great media company that has utterly debased itself.

Watching the "Jesse Brown phishes reddit users" show with a bucket of popcorn and a vague memory of saying to people that NO, ACTUALLY, YOU WOULDN’T JUST MAGICALLY "KNOW" THAT SOMEONE IS A TOXIC AND DANGEROUS EGOMANIAC, HOW DO YOU THINK JEFFREY'S DAHMER GOT PEOPLE TO COME OVER FOR DINNER?

*cough*
At least he has to pay his immediate enablers.

(Five'll get you ten that the escalation into breakdown territory happened because of a chat with his favourite guest. Can't wait for him to start rambling on about CSIS.)

I think these are all in order, and you should be able to read all of them in a browser (though not replies):

Jesse Brown was upset that his listenership dropped in the wake of refusing to let guests use the word "genocide".

What does he imagine it's about to do now?

‼️‼️‼️‼️
OH MY GOD I MISSED A DEVELOPMENT!

Lebrun has asked Brown to comment on the situation!

Listening to #Canadaland’s podcast about #crypto currency in #TO stores funding Iran’s #IRGC…then immediately thought of how recently saw a BitCoin atm machine next to the cash atm at my new family doctor’s office in a panic….and realized it’s come along way since Silkroad days :/

Huge scoop by rhe Canadaland team : what does training up a new generation of Canadian airline mechanics take? Apparently, it takes scammed procurement, nepotism, illegal profiteering, plagiaraized training materials, and AI hallucinations.

Feel safer yet?

Give this a listen. It starts off wild and then it really takes off.

Also, please boost and please support independent Canadian journalism, because it’s almost all we have left.

Scoop: AI Slop Training for Aircraft Mechanics | CANADALAND

“Everybody needs to know about this. We need to shut this down. This is aviation. This is training. There are safety issues here.” -Jeff Weeks, Aviation Executive

I'm not a regular listener of this podcast but I did find this one worth listening to. Remember, when the host interviewed Jesse Brown a few months back about his antisemitism series he wasn't really equipped to argue with him. But here he's interviewing a guy who is a bit older and more experienced who is able to give a grounded critique of the problematic Canadaland series.
