🌼The “elephant trunk” of Pedicularis is not just decorative. It’s a pollen-dispensing mechanism shaped by pollinator-mediated selection. (9/9)

Today is a good day! Lucky enough to finally get a shot of a bee, in this case, a two-spotted bumblebee, buzz pollinating my native red columbine (Aquilegia canadensis).

Henderson’s Shooting Star (Primula hendersonii) has nodding flowers with swept-back petals expose the stamens and pistil, encouraging buzz pollination by native bees. The bees vibrate their flight muscles to shake pollen loose—a technique also used by bumblebees on tomatoes!
Yesterdays fact.
Sorry we were otherwise distracted.
Still relevant though!

# 129.
Buzz pollination - in brief.
Bees rapidly contract their flight muscles. This produces powerful vibrations which they channel to the flower using their legs/mouths.
Result = a #pollen explosion all over the bee.
Happy bee!
