Ebola: fever after trip to Uganda, two hospitalized in Milan

MEC - The Ministry of Health communicates, with reference to the epidemic of Bunyavirus-BVD disease that has developed in the Democratic Republic of Congo, that in-depth health investigations are currently underway concerning some individuals who returned in the past hours from Uganda and are undergoing specialist clinical assessment at high-specialized hospital facilities as a precautionary measure.

In particular, two people with febrile symptoms have been transferred to the “Sacco” of Milan, a facility equipped with the highest levels of biocontainment and management of high-risk infectious diseases, where diagnostic tests will be carried out in accordance with national and international protocols.

The other people belonging to the families involved are undergoing health surveillance and monitoring by the competent authorities. The Ministry of Health, through the Department of Prevention, is in contact with the Lombardy Region, which has immediately activated itself.

National and European Coordination on the Ebola Emergency
The Ministry constantly monitors the evolution of the situation relating to the Ebola virus in close coordination with the Regions, the National Institute of Public Health, reference hospital facilities, national health authorities, and all involved entities. Yesterday, the Department of Prevention of the Ministry of Health participated in the HSC-Health Security Committee meeting of the European Commission and organized a national coordination point dedicated to the Ebola situation, with the participation of representatives from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Interior, the Crisis Unit, the National Institute of Public Health, the Superior Council of Health, the Inter-Regional Prevention Coordination, the Spallanzani Institute, the Sacco Hospital of Milan, and the San Matteo Hospital of Pavia.

The national system for preparedness and response to infectious emergencies is fully operational, and all procedures for managing suspected cases have been activated. The Ministry of Health will continue to provide official updates based on the evolution of the epidemiological picture and ongoing diagnostic results. The risk in Italy remains very low.

Jamestown Canyon virus is transmissible by Aedes aegypti and is only moderately blocked by Wolbachia co-infection

Author summary Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV), a newly emerging virus in North America, can result in disease spillover from wild mammals into human populations via the bite of infected mosquitoes. We show that the mosquito Aedes aegypti, known for transmitting many viral pathogens to humans globally, and whose distribution is creeping northward in the USA toward regions where JCV is present, is likely able to transmit the virus. Wolbachia is an endosymbiotic bacterium being released in wild mosquito populations of because it limits the replication of human viruses inside the mosquito, limiting their transmission to humans. We show that Wolbachia has a limited ability to control the replication of JCV, which is likely because Wolbachia-induced antiviral response is quite weak, and unique aspects of negative-sense virus biology make them less susceptible to blocking. Our findings suggest that JCV may serve as a comparative model to positive-sense viruses like dengue in dissecting the mechanism of Wolbachia-mediated virus blocking. It also warns that shifting mosquito distributions, as expected under a changing climate, could bring JCV and Aedes mosquitoes into greater contact, potentially increasing the incidence of JCV in humans.

Isn't #GenomeSegmentation costly for viruses, as many particles will have an incomplete genome? Study shows that co-infecting incomplete #bunyavirus particles can reconstitute a complete genome, supporting infection & potentially transmission #PLOSBiology https://plos.io/3hL0MCK
Incomplete bunyavirus particles can cooperatively support virus infection and spread

Genome segmentation is assumed to be costly for viruses with non-selective genome packaging, as they produce high numbers of particles with an incomplete genome. However, this study shows that upon co-infection, complementing incomplete bunyavirus particles can reconstitute a complete genome, supporting virus infection and potentially contributing to within-host spread and between-host transmission.
