There is this minor movement to stop calling #LLM hallucinations that. Which is, weird. Some kind of weird anthropocentric thing. If AI shit, would we be all up in "No, we are the shitters! AI can't shit." The maths of #hallucination are actually quite similar if at much different resolution, simpler in LLMs. What is going on is that #AI is in fact a little like us in some respects, but totally alien in others. It is interesting! But hey, if you want to call it #AI #Bullshitting, OK. Fine.

There's an episode on my employer's podcast about the energy transition to renewables and how GenAI is playing a role. A high-ranking executive from an energy service provider is also there.

What I find problematic is that there's not a single word about the enormous energy consumption caused by AI and LLMs.
It is too one-sidedly presented as a positive thing. #ai #bullshitting

According to researchers at University of #Glasgow, #LLMs are not #hallucinating. The technical term is #bullshitting.

"Calling their mistakes ‘hallucinations’ lends itself to the confusion that the machines are in some way misperceiving but are nonetheless trying to convey something that they believe or have perceived. This is the wrong metaphor.... they are not trying to convey information at all. They are bullshitting."

ChatGPT is bullshit - Ethics and Information Technology

Recently, there has been considerable interest in large language models: machine learning systems which produce human-like text and dialogue. Applications of these systems have been plagued by persistent inaccuracies in their output; these are often called “AI hallucinations”. We argue that these falsehoods, and the overall activity of large language models, is better understood as bullshit in the sense explored by Frankfurt (On Bullshit, Princeton, 2005): the models are in an important way indifferent to the truth of their outputs. We distinguish two ways in which the models can be said to be bullshitters, and argue that they clearly meet at least one of these definitions. We further argue that describing AI misrepresentations as bullshit is both a more useful and more accurate way of predicting and discussing the behaviour of these systems.

I’m not against #AI at all btw. To me, this is just a word to vaguely describe a number of technolgies to somewhat resemble human intelligence.

What I am against is AI #bullshitting. I.e. making claims about AI tech that are either unverifiable or have even been debunked before.

For example, spreading the misinformation that LLMs are good tools to summarize text, when data shows they’re anything but.

Or just magical thinking in general ("AI will save/doom us all!!11!").

@anuko @karppinen @osma Olen periaatteessa jäävi sanomaan mitään, koska tuorein(kin) hankkeemme Xamkissa on (taas) sekaantunut tekoälyyn ja saa EU-rahaa, mutta kaiken sonnan seassa on yksi valopilkku: edes jotain mikä edistäisi Euroopan omaa digi-infraa ja kapasiteettia.

Tehdas-analogian valinta ihmetytti täälläkin - ehkä se tarvittiin vakuuttamaan 1900-lukulaiset sedät siitä, että kyseessä on jotain, mitä kannattaa rahoittaa?

Das ist nicht fair! - Dieser Satz geht uns oft durch den Kopf. Im Sport gibt es deswegen extra Schiedsrichter*innen und Kameras, mit denen ganz genau geschaut wird, ob alles fair zuging. Wer foult, wird schlimmstenfalls ausgeschlossen und darf nicht mehr mitspielen. Ganz anders in der Politik. Wer foult, gewinnt - und Fairness lohnt sich nicht. Das ist der Eindruck, den viele nach der Wahl Donald Trumps, aber auch nach der Bundestagswahl hatten.
