🔥Our history, going up in flames! Fires are destroying so many of our historical Victorian mills. Big Mill in Leek and Middleton Mill in Rochdale are this weekend's casualties.

Dalton Mills in #Keighley is another sad example. I photographed this wonderful historical space a few years ago. After a "mysterious" fires, the mill has collapsed, leaving only the facade.

⛪An abandoned church hall, later used as a nightclub. Somewhere in England.

Built in 1903 as a Methodist Central Hall, before its 1990s rebirth as a nightclub. It was a legendary rave venue for two decades.

The building’s history hasn't been without tragedy. It was the site of several fatalities: a fatal fall from the clock tower in the 90s, a murder outside the venue, and a drug-related death in the 2000s.

The Lion Chambers on Hope Street in Glasgow. Designed by James Salmon Jnr in a mix of Glasgow Style and Scottish Baronial, it was built in 1905 using the Hennebique System of reinforced concrete, but is now in a rather sad state.

The hospital closed in 1998 and it fell into disuse. This was followed by the inevitable fires in 2004 and 2016, leaving the building badly damaged and at risk of being lost. In 2020, it was used as a filming location for The Batman, where it served as Gotham Orphanage.

The Central Admissions Block of Hartwood Hospital near Shotts to the east of Glasgow. Designed by J.L. Murray in an imposing Scots Baronial style, it opened in 1895 as the Lanark District Asylum. A tubercolosis sanatorium was added to the site in 1906.

The B-listed 1894 Whiteinch Lesser Burgh Hall in the west of Glasgow in February 2023 (top) and today (bottom). The dormer windows were removed in May 2023 supposedly to help protect the building. I'm no expert, but to me the way this has been done seems to have increased the amount of water running down the facade, and in doing so it has promoted the growth of foliage, to the detriment of the building as a whole.

A total of 75 schools were constructed by the Glasgow School Board between 1874 and 1916, and this is one of the oldest still standing. It currently lies empty and abandoned.

The former Springburn Public School (and later Springburn Primary School) on Gourlay Street in Glasgow.

Designed by David Thomson and built in the early 1870s, it was one of the first schools constructed by the Glasgow School Board after the introduction of free and compulsory education for 5 to 13 year olds through the Education (Scotland) Act of 1872.

Over the following two years, it was restored and converted into 49 affordable homes. Thus, it provides a template for saving empty listed buildings across the city which are otherwise at risk of being lost while increasing the supply of affordable housing.
