Turns out hanging out with colleagues for 3 days, hearing about their research and discussing the cutting edge of this discipline we've chosen has a regenerative effect on your enthusiasm for your work. Thanks #britsoc23
What a keynote this is. Finn Mackay Is putting the conservative backlash against social sciences & humanities into powerful personal & societal context, showing how it threatens women & LGBTQ+ ppl. Like other scholars, Mackay’s work in gender studies & trans rights is “ground zero” right now. #BritSoc23
Access at #BritSoc23 has been great for my access needs, except that no speakers are using microphones. My auditory processing is not holding up! But I am v impressed with the mobility access, adjustable lighting in most rooms & close accessible parking. (Today’s BSA conf thread - TBC…)
The Social Divisions/Identities panel I was part of today was really well planned - very complementary papers. Lots of discussion about who research is for and what researchers’ responsibilities are, in terms of making research useful to the communities we research with. I’m also finding the venue accessible for my access needs - a rarity in my conference experience! #BritSoc23
If you’re at #britsoc23 , don’t miss our digital sociology stream plenary. Details below:
#BritSoc2023 thread (cross-posting some of this at Twitter). Now hearing about Natalie Wotherspoon’s fascinating work on #ME and social isolation & loneliness - some very relatable findings that I suspect many chronically ill people can relate to. Loneliness as societal & relational e.g. social withdrawal can lead to social rejection. #BritSoc23 #chronicillness #disability
In Manchester for #britsoc23! Looking forward to hopefully reviving my sociological imagination

Next week, I'll be giving the presidential address at the British Sociological Association annual conference ... look forward to meeting up with all those attending ...
