In 1833, botanist David Douglas travelled north of the then-brigade trail with a herd of cattle that were intended for #FortStJames -- north of #Kamloops he travelled a different route than any of the trails I heard mentioned. #BCHistory #BritishColumbia #CattleDrive #BrigadeTrails https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/cattle-drive/

Here is a listing of the Hudson's Bay Company Brigade Trails that are scattered through #BritishColumbia -- there are more: this is anything but a complete listing! It could be said that anyone who lives in today's British Columbia resides somewhere near a Brigade Trail, whether old or new! It is part of our history. #HBCHistory #BrigadeTrails #BCHistory #Blogpost http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/brigade-trails/

Here we have a story told, by an American packer, of his journey over one of the HBC Brigade Trails leading north from #Kamloops to #FortStJames #BritishColumbia. He calls it the old Brigade Trail, and I guess it might have been, at one point. #History #BCHistory #BrigadeTrails http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/1858-brigade-trails/

From Green Lake #BritishColumbia, the new Brigade trail swung north and west to finally rejoin the older trail at Bridge River -- but the two sections of the trail passed each other on opposite sides of a lake, before joining and heading home again. #History #BrigadeTrails #BCHistory #Blogpost #BCTrailsHistory http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/horse-lake/

From Loon Lake, in the Cariboo of #BritishColumbia, the 1843 Brigade Trail led north over the range of hills to beautiful Green Lake, sometimes called Butte lake for the lovely mound-ship hill that lay on the south bank of the Lake. It is a beautiful, but rough, country, and the HBC men travelled over ancient eskers to reach Green Lake. #HBCHistory #BritishColumbia #Cariboo #BrigadeTrails #History #Blogpost http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/green-lake/

From Copper Creek, north of #Kamloops #BC, the 1843 Brigade trail went on to touch at Loon Lake, before heading north again to the Bonaparte River. A.C. Anderson describes the trail and its crossings in this blogpost, and in the posts that come before and follow. #HBC #History #BrigadeTrails #BritishColumbia #Blogpost http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/loon-lake/

My next book, The HBC Brigades, will be published in the spring of 2024, if all goes well. It is a massive #history of all the Brigade Trails that ran through #BritishColumbia and #Washington State, and over the mountains to #FortLangley, in the years between 1807 and 1858. Here is the story of one of the earliest trails... #Blogpost #BrigadeTrails http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/old-brigade-trail/

Brigade trails run all over the British Columbia landscape, from Fort Alexandria (generally) to Kamloops and then down the Okanagan -- well, that was before they built the trails over the Tulameen Plateau to Fort Hope, of course. And there are more: this is not by any means a complete list! #BrigadeTrails #BritishColumbia #Washington #History http://nancymargueriteanderson.com/h-b-co-brigade-trails-in-british-columbia/
THE HBC BRIGADES, 1826:
"The Horses are much fatigued, & many of them have swellings on the sides occasioned by the Kegs, and other hard pieces they carry. The country we are now in is completely parched up, & in many places has been lately overrun by fire, consequently affords but scanty provisions for the Horses, which added to the myriads of insects by which they are tormented night and day, reduces the poor beasts very much.

Lac La Hache, or Axe Lake, lies on the brigade trail between Fort Alexandria (south of Quesnel, #BC) and Horse Lake (south of 100-Mile House, BC).I would love to know how it got its name, but presume it was because of an axe lost in its waters somewhere. Nevertheless, I do have a few stories about this lake.... #HBC #History #BrigadeTrails #Blogpost http://nancymargueriteanderson.comlac-la-hache/
