I think self publishing is where I will find what I am looking for.... though there needs to be a more optimal way to index and search for independent authors.
I know of mecha samurai empire and the battletech series of novels... I have mixed feelings about both for difrent reasons

I'm currently reading the book Spillover by David Quammen published in 2012. Its an incredible read with a fantastic overview of zoologic viruses and bacteria that "spillover" to human populations.
While it covers a few of the same topics as The Hot Zone by Richard Preston in 1994, but is not as overdramatized. A fantastic read, especially with a global pandemic fresh in mind. It doesn't have the horrific, graphic descriptions that the Hot Zone has, which is a plus if you are squeamish.
