Human–nature relationships are often framed positively, but research rarely addresses #biophobia, the aversion to #nature. However, negative relationships with nature are likely to become more widespread following societal and environmental changes, with serious implications for public health and conservation efforts.

Biophobia: people’s aversion to nature

"Evidence suggests that biophobia is a growing trend in many parts of the world. Ironically, this trend has emerged during a time when increasing people’s biophilia has become a critical challenge for ensuring the sustainability of the human relationship with nature. As highlighted in this review, biophobia can harm public health and undermine conservation, but lacks unified research. Although foundational theories and concepts have been established, a deeper and interdisciplinary understanding of the manifestations, drivers, and feedback loops associated with the human aversion to nature is urgent." >>

Well, the friendly people at Gaian Way website considered it of interest, even if it's referred to the Spanish edition of #PoisonIvy which is behind the original edition. So, here you have my critical comment translated into English: https://gaianway.org/g-w-wilsons-disappointingly-biophobic-poison-ivy/

Something I have been aware of, now has a name - Biophobia

" ... that many people, especially in urbanised societies, exhibit responses of fear or disgust towards wild organisms. The vicious cycle of biophobia risks accelerating the extinction of experience, leading to long-term adverse consequences for the conservation of biodiversity.

"Although our relationship to nature and our relationships with one another may feel like disparate phenomena, they are both parallel and related. A life without nature, it seems, is a lonely life—and vice versa... If you’ve been meaning to go outside more or connect with your neighbors, you might as well work on both." #loneliness #nature #outdoors #biophobia #community #neighbors #urbanism #urbanplanning #landscapearchitecture #parks

Our Lonely Indoor Lives

Our relationship to nature and our relationships with one another are deeply intertwined.

This is why I tend to dislike memes about killing critters indiscriminately even if it's meant to be humourous. Theres enough biophobia in the world without normalising it.
