"A broad coalition of livestock groups, #FossilFuel giants, #agriculture and environment regulators, utility companies, Republicans and Democrats, and a handful of environmental groups has coalesced to hail manure #biogas as a win-win, untapped source of renewable energy.

Stopping that methane is valuable to society, but with manure #biodigesters, the costs may outweigh the benefits."

Big Oil and Big Ag are teaming up to turn cow poop into energy — and profits. The math doesn’t add up.

(5/6) It's the way that #dairy operations store #manure that produces the potent greenhouse gas—despite other, low-methane storage methods. #Biodigesters aren't removing greenhouse gas from the air, they generate #methane they didn't need to generate & then trap it: https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/392881/dairy-biogas-manure-digester

(3/x) Biodigesters are a form of #greenwashing. At best, they are a costly use of #climate funding: #Biodigesters cost $1,130 per #cow per year but generate just $128 worth of gas. At worst, they expand a brutal factory farm system by incentivizing dairy farms to grow: https://www.vox.com/future-perfect/392881/dairy-biogas-manure-digester

@bethsawin Is this not more of a nuanced contextual thing? I've been starting to replace natural gas appliances for alternatives, and yet I'm also really interested in small-scale #biodigesters + #biogas stoves, rocket mass heaters, architecting better ventilation setups, etc. where appropriate.

The #electrifyeverything movement has to also think about #materialblindness , lifetime duration, rebuildability, electricity transmission, etc. or it'll breed it's own divisions.

The coolest thing at Larnach's Castle is the remains of the biodigester toilets they used to make gas for lighting etc. In the 1800s!
