"But it will also end the (surprisingly recent) Conservative ban on councils setting up their own bus companies to directly compete with private firms.
"Buses are the most frequently used form of public transport and are relied on by millions of people – disproportionately lower-income workers, young people, retirees and more."

A reason for slow buses we don't talk about:
The back door sensors are overly sensitive, and when the bus is packed, the doors insist on refusing to close, preventing the bus driver from moving the bus.
That's not on DOT to fix, to be honest.
And don't get me started on the "PLEASE MOVE AWAY FROM THE DOORS. PLEASE MOVE AWAY FROM THE DOORS. PLEASE MOVE AWAY FROM THE DOORS."
...while the bus is moving.
I have a friend and they want to get to work. It's only 3.7km to work, it would be a 10 min drive if they could drive (but they can't), it would be a 15min bicycle ride if there was any bicycle infrastructure for that route.
Instead it's a 12 min bus ride plus 17 mins of walking or a 39 min bus ride plus 6 mins of walking.
The bus also only comes every 30mins.
The West deserves #BetterBuses!
Friends of the Earth Melbourne's petition for #BetterBuses in the west will be debated this evening. David Ettershank and I spoke to the team out the front of parliament ahead of the debate
We’ll keep working with the community to get the bus reforms we need
Tune in to the debate here: https://www.parliament.vic.gov.au/council
And keep watching afterwards to see our new Greens MP Anasina Gray-Barbario's inaugural speech!
Bus franchising is only the start.
