Pakistan’s neglected southwestern province of Balochistan has been the scene of a yearslong insurgency. There has been a dramatic uptick in attacks in recent years underscoring the struggles the government in Islamabad faces in dealing with myriad security threats. But the seizure Tuesday of a passenger train by the outlawed Baluch Liberation Army, or BLA, took the insurgency to a new level, with the first such large-scale operation by the militant group. The militants took hundreds of passengers aboard the Jafer express hostage before Pakistani forces said Wednesday that they had killed all 50 of the attackers. The military says the assailants killed 21 of the passengers and that all of the remaining passengers were rescued.

Explosions have struck a natural gas pipeline in Iran. An Iranian official on Wednesday blamed the blasts on a “sabotage and terrorist action” in the country as tensions remain high in the Middle East amid Israel’s war on Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Details were scarce, though the blasts hit a natural gas pipeline running from western Iran north to cities on the Caspian Sea. There are no known insurgent groups operating in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, home to the Bakhtiari, a branch of Iran’s Lur ethnic group. However, Iran has been on edge over its economy and mass protests for years now.

Iran: At least 9 killed in Pakistan's tit-for-tat strikes
Pakistan’s air force has launched retaliatory airstrikes in Iran allegedly targeting militant positions. The attack early Thursday killed at least nine people and further raised tensions between the neighboring nations. The strikes in Sistan and Baluchestan province follow Iran’s attack Tuesday on Pakistani soil that killed two children in the southwestern Baluchistan province. The strikes imperil diplomatic relations between the two neighbors, as Iran and nuclear-armed Pakistan have long regarded each other with suspicion over militant attacks. The attacks also raised the threat of violence spreading in a Middle East unsettled by Israel’s war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
