Chemists discover clean and green way to recycle Teflon

New research demonstrates a simple, eco-friendly method to break down Teflon—one of the world's most durable plastics—into useful chemical building blocks.

Ball mill technique produces nanoscale scaffolds that filter PFAS

PFAS are fluorinated compounds found in many everyday products, such as outdoor clothing and cookware like Teflon pans. This is because PFAS are durable, heat-resistant and dirt-repellent. Their stability is precisely what leads to problems: although potentially harmful to our health, these substances are scarcely broken down at all in the environment and are regarded as "forever chemicals." PFAS are also found in wastewater. Although they can be removed by filtration, this is a laborious process.

From pond to polymer: Chemists create fully recyclable plastics using whole-cell algae

A team of chemists is pioneering a new approach to creating plastics made from whole-cell algae and common chemical components. These biohybrid plastics are strong, highly adaptable, and fully recyclable.

A video of me adding the phosphors. Yes, it has only been 20 minutes on the mill, but I had to pull it off for a quick density test.

I added 60 more grams to the ChiChis jar as it was looking thin. I may have exceeded the proper rating, but I can always add more solvent in. It sure does look bright at the end there!

Its neat seeing the clump roll in. I sure am glad I built that ball mill! Its amazing seeing how well the nitro lacquer is working as a phosphor medium. It coats the glass SO well!

I borrowed a fitting from a shop Vac that I am gonna use to print an adapter to make a crude tube sucker for coating. Gonna make a port for sucking up phosphors and another for blowing off the remaining solvents with clean dry air from the blower.

Friday is test day.... or Tomorrow if I cannot handle myself.

At work today I found that the VHB tape had finally failed. Booo. No matter- the cotton floaty bits have now completely dissolved in the solvents. I got the mill spinning again by adding a clamp to it, and a shim to make the jars drift to the other side away from the motor.

My Ebay chemical buying habit is supporting some Ukrainians- my third chemical arrived today- Diethyl Phthalate- probably the most toxic of the bunch. I added a bit of it to the Chi Chis bottle which I divided in two.

I weighted out 30 grams of warm white 3700k phosphor and added it to the ChiChis, and 60 grams adding to a Wegmans Bruschetta Jar. After mixing for a little, I upped the ChiChis jar to 90 grams.

Apparently the ratio is 1.1 kilos for 8 liters... I am learning. They say to leave it spinning for two days before using it. Friday will be test day- assuming I can wait that long :)

So excited!

I came into work today and found that my ball mill was still running after its weekend Stress test!

I got excited, and am trying a mix. Three tests. With each one, my dissolving of the nitro cotton into the organic solvents improved.

We shall see tomorrow or Wednesday if they blend out on the ball mill. The old salsa blue lidded jar I added some tube bits to to sort of act as agitator balls and help stir the cotton chunks in.

Gosh the cotton really thickens up the mix when enough is added. Thicker and stickier- leaving the cellulose coating everywhere- which is perfect!

I gotta bring in a scale and get all the chunkies out before adding phosphors. Very excited!

Still have one more chemical to add in too... but I am curious to see the results without adding it.

I constructed the ball mill today! I printed some "prototypes" that ended up being good enough to just use. I added some threads to the steel rods and slid some skateboard bearings into the printed parts for the PVC tubes to spin on.

So excited for this! I have had some "chunky" and splotchy coatings in the past, but with this "rock tumbler" the phosphors should be nice and powdery in the nitrocellulose solvent slurry. The guy I got the recipe from said to leave the phosphor mix on the ball mill for 48 hours before use.

So stress testing this with water in the giant container over the weekend. Maybe the motor I VHB taped on there will actually hold... or maybe I will have to model and print a motor mount? We shall see when I come in on Monday.
