@lachlan If we're talking originalism #StarTrek there arguably are no "cool space ships battling" — at least on screen.
Sure, we get cool space ships and we get battling. #TOS #BalanceOfTerror has both, but the battle they couldn't do with #VFX they instead delivered with dramatic storytelling told by good writers.
Kirk wins with moxie, not pew-pew boom-boom.
It wasn't until #TNG we actually got exciting starship combat on screen.
So much history and lore established in TOS. Although, I'd say TNG took the Neutral Zone to the next level.

I think it's the first episode with Romulans as well, so yes.
The first episode to introduce the Neutral Zone is “Balance of Terror” from TOS.
I get that some people might watch the episode and think I’m making too much of a moment that lasts only a second in a story focused on war and bigotry. That’s fair. But for me, that quiet exchange on the bridge has always stood out.
It’s not a speech or a turning point in the plot. It’s just a cool, confident moment that says a lot without trying to.

I was thinking that as well, but the lack of an enemy Jem'Hadar perspective and all the extra non-tactical plots make it much less focused. 🤔
The thing that makes #BalanceOfTerror so good is the extended focus on the battle of wits between the two captains. 🙏
So... #StarTrekEnterprise, does that take place BEFORE the Romulan/Federation war, that war fought with nuclear weapons where they NEVER saw a Romulan ship, as described in #StarTrekTOS #BalanceOfTerror?
That seems implausible given how many ships and conflicts the NX-01 gets into (particularly the end of the Xindi arc).
