For me, understanding First Contact is more important today than ever. It's a reminder that our greatest tools of destruction can be repurposed to build a future of peace.

Commander Data said it best: "It is an historical irony that Dr. Cochrane would choose an instrument of mass destruction to inaugurate an era of peace."

Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations

Happy First Contact Day. Live long and prosper!🖖🏾

It was April 5, 1987, and a brand new network called Fox took its first breath of primetime air, and Tracey Ullman was there from the very beginning.

Her variety-sketch series was unlike anything else on television at the time, blending sharp comedy, character work, and a little something called The Simpsons, which debuted as animated shorts on the show before becoming a cultural phenomenon of its own.

Here's to the woman who helped launch a network and a dynasty, all in one night!

Turns out, Homer Simpson and American Dad understood the news business better than most of us gave them credit for. For years, animated series have used sharp satire to warn us about the media circus and the endless chase for ratings. I’m revisiting seven episodes that really got it right.

And if you’re following The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, here’s a no-spoiler take: The show finally finds its groove by leaning into the underdog spirit.

R.J. Decker has a great crew and the perfect Florida setting for a detective show. It reminds me of a mix between Magnum P.I., with that sunny private-eye vibe, and Burn Notice, where a guy who lost his job helps regular people while dealing with local crooks. If the leads keep hitting it off like they are now, we might even get some of that Moonlighting energy in the next few episodes.

R.J. Decker Review: Scott Speedman Takes on ABC’s New P.I. Show

Scott Speedman stars in ABC's R.J. Decker as a disgraced newspaper photographer trying to rebuild his life as a private investigator, a lighter kind of crime series.
