“Sei mio fratello”. “Vita mia, sempre con te”. Li leggi, questi messaggi, e pensi che siano messaggi di solidarietà, di pietà. Ti rincuorano. E invece guardi bene e ti accorgi, sgomento, che sono messaggi di approvazione per i cinque ragazzi di Taranto che l’altra notte hanno scannato un giovane del Mali, di 35 anni, Bakary Sako, semplicemente perché era nero. Come facevano 150 anni fa i razzisti del Ku Klux Klan in Alabama. I social sono pieni di questi messaggi. Non solidarietà alla famiglia di Bakary, o alla comunità maliana. ma agli autori del pestaggio e dell’omicidio.
Vedete: è inutile credere che in Italia il razzismo, anche il razzismo più feroce, sia solo un fatto marginale, che riguarda una minoranza. È un fenomeno di massa. Che travolge anche i giovani. E che è alimentato da partiti politici e da sistemi di informazione che da molti anni hanno criminalizzato gli immigrati e in modo particolare gli africani. Sdoganando ogni forma, anche la più atroce, di xenofobia. Se non cambiano le cose, e se non si ferma la macchina della propaganda, soprattutto dei partiti di destra, fondata sulla caccia all’immigrato, sui decreti anti profughi, sul divieto dei soccorsi in mare, sui Cpr e sulle deportazioni in Albania, se non si ferma questa valanga, il razzismo continuerà a dilagare.
Bakary l’altra notte stava andando alla stazione di Taranto per salire su un pullman che lo avrebbe portato ai campi, a Massafra, dove lavorava come bracciante. Cinque giovani lo hanno circondato e picchiato. Lui è scappato, si è rifugiato in un bar. Il barista lo ha ricacciato in strada, e lì Bakary è stato colpito a morte da tre coltellate. Il problema non è punire i cinque ragazzi o il barista. Il problema è sospendere le campagne politiche xenofobe.

“You are my brother.” “Life of mine, always with you.” Read these messages, and you think they are messages of solidarity, of pity. They comfort you. But look closely and you realize, with dismay, that they are messages of approval for the five boys from Taranto who last night attacked a young man from Mali, 35 years old, Bakary Sako, simply because he was black. Like the racists of the Ku Klux Klan did 150 years ago in Alabama. Social media is full of these messages. Not solidarity with the family of Bakary, or with the Malian community, but with the perpetrators of the beating and murder.
See: it’s useless to believe that in Italy, even the most ferocious racism is just a marginal issue, affecting only a minority. It’s a mass phenomenon. That overwhelms young people as well. And that is fueled by political parties and information systems that, for many years, have criminalized immigrants, and particularly Africans. They are desensitizing every form, even the most atrocious, of xenophobia. If things don’t change, and if the propaganda machine doesn't stop, especially that of right-wing parties, founded on the hunt for immigrants, anti-refugee decrees, the ban on rescue operations at sea, CPs and deportations to Albania, if this avalanche doesn't stop, racism will continue to spread.
Bakary last night was going to the Taranto train station to board a bus that would take him to the fields, in Massafra, where he worked as a farm laborer. Five young men surrounded him and beat him up. He escaped, took refuge in a bar. The bartender threw him back onto the street, and there Bakary was killed with three stab wounds. The problem isn’t punishing the five boys or the bartender. The problem is suspending the xenophobic political campaigns.
