Meet the Flock: The Birds Behind Duffney’s Bird Barn

Meet My Babies If you've read my first two blog posts, you've heard me talk quite a bit about my birds. You've heard about chicken math, rescue roosters, and how Duffney's Bird Barn came to be. But before we go any further, I think it's time you meet the real stars of Duffney's Bird Barn. My babies. Now, some people might call them livestock. I call them family. If you ever visit Duffney's Bird Barn, the geese will almost certainly be the first to greet you. Whether you want them to or […]

How Chicken Math Took Over My Backyard

The Day I Learned Chicken Math Is Real If you've ever owned chickens, you've probably heard the term "chicken math." For those who haven't, chicken math is the mysterious phenomenon where you start with a few birds and somehow end up with far more than you ever planned. It defies logic, ignores budgets, and somehow always wins. When I first started raising poultry in 2019, I thought I was getting a small flock. My brother and sister-in-law brought me three Royal Palm turkey poults—Knox, […]

Starting Over, One Stitch, One Seed, and One Bird at a Time

Welcome to Duffney's Bird Barn If you've found your way here, welcome. I'm so glad you're here. My name is Misty, and I'm the creator behind Duffney's Bird Barn. I'm a mom, crocheter, bird lover, gardener, and someone who is still figuring things out one day at a time. This blog is where I'll be sharing a little bit of everything—backyard poultry, crochet projects, gardening adventures, homestead life, and the occasional lesson I've learned the hard way. Most importantly, I want this to […]

#BackyardFlock

Confirmed.

Some fox/cat/raccoon/weasel out there definitely discovered our birds and is trying to get the smaller ones as soon as it's really dark.

Yay.

I don't have any *affection* for these birds - they're convenient livestock that fit with our lifestyle.

But I was still outside in bare feet & PJs with a baseball bat like an idiot ~30 seconds after I heard the clamor.

I get that #LA is being LA again, and spearheading something we all should be a part of, but this first weekend of summer vacation was really busy around here.

Saturday's pride festival was fine, the girls got swag and we saw folks we don't see often enough.

#Google tried to delete another account I'd automated a thing with, and consequently forgotten about. (Oops!)

We lost three young birds over only two nights, & therefore need to change some things.
