¿Sabían que el código del Bushido, tal como lo conocemos en la actualidad, no fue un documento escrito único y antiguo, sino una serie de normas de conducta que se transformaron profundamente según la época?

Durante el periodo de guerras civiles en el Japón del siglo XVI, el comportamiento del guerrero estaba centrado en la eficacia en el combate y la lealtad absoluta al señor feudal por encima de cualquier noción de piedad. Fue solo con la llegada de la era de paz del periodo Edo, bajo el Shogunato Tokugawa, cuando los samuráis pasaron de ser combatientes activos a funcionarios y administradores. En este tiempo, el Bushido incorporó elementos del confucianismo y el budismo zen, dando un peso mayor a la rectitud, la benevolencia y el cultivo de las artes para evitar que la clase guerrera perdiera su propósito en tiempos sin batallas.

La palabra Bushido no fue de uso común en Japón hasta la publicación del libro Bushido: El alma de Japón en el año 1899. El autor, Nitobe Inazo, escribió la obra originalmente en inglés mientras vivía en los Estados Unidos, con el objetivo de explicar los valores japoneses a los occidentales. Nitobe admitió que no tenía fuentes escritas directas de un código formal, por lo que recopiló tradiciones orales, poemas y anécdotas históricas para dar forma a un sistema de valores coherente que pudiera compararse con la caballería europea. Esta interpretación moderna fue la que finalmente se popularizó a nivel global y regresó a Japón como una definición estandarizada de la identidad del guerrero.
