Jesus hat am Kreuz die Dunkelheit, die Gottesferne für unsere Sünden erfahren. Das bleibende Vertrauen in die noch größere Güte und Weisheit des göttlichen Vaters trägt ihn hindurch.

Auch darauf stellt sich die christliche Mystik, der Unterschied etwa zum Zen-Buddhismus wird deutlich: Buddha entschlief sanft nach seiner Erleuchtung, Jesus stirbt schreiend aufrecht am Kreuz. Der östliche Geist ist hier nicht auf die Leiblichkeit der Dinge gerichtet. Das relative Ich geht still in das transzendente Ich auf.

Gott wurde im Christentum Mensch, um auch den Leib, das menschliche Individuum zu erlösen, das verlangt dessen gewaltsamen Opfertod. Diese Glaubenstatsache ist tröstlich bei der Bewältigung vieler Lebenssituationen. Jesus starb deshalb nicht als "Erleuchteter", sondern hilflos als Gequälter, wird somit zum göttlichen Begleiter durch die Schwere und Dunkelheit des Lebens.
