A few photos from the 2026 Sei Boku Bonsai Kai show in #SanMateo. I drove down to hang out with a friend in Oakland on Friday, and then attended this #bonsai show on Saturday morning.

Really a nicely sized event with about 35 knockout trees, excellent club sales table, and a few vendors. This shohin redwood in the first pic is about 8 inches tall -- amazing work by Marsha Mekisich.

Lodgepole Pine #bonsai

- Had bunches reduced to no more than five rows of needles.
- needs to be repotted next year, big tangled surface roots need to be cut, and the graft site needs to be covered.

we visited a botanical garden, and they had a small outdoor nursery of plants that were started from cuttings from the display trees. this little Thuja occidentalis 'Picadilly' was on a discount table for $12.50. kind of a steal.

i will be bringing this little tree to the next bonsai club meeting, for advice on how / when to prune and repot. it seems to have good bones for bonsai; no telling what the roots look like, though.

Thuja occidentalis (Eastern white cedar) is a great species for #bonsai because it is winter hardy, and amenable to pruning. this cultivar has compact foliage that is especially suitable.
