Had a really nice morning at Tawharunui Regional Park. The beaches were busy with school groups, but the nature walk (predator fenced) was very quiet. We saw tūī, korimako/bellbirds, tieke/saddlebacks, hihi/stitchbirds, pātete/brown teal, kereru, piwakawaka ... and takahe! We've seen them in this park before, but only a glimpse in the distance. Today they were ambling along very close to us and quite unconcerned. #Birds #NZBirds

Red-Shouldered Hawk. This piece was a suggestion from a patron who stopped by my art booth this last year. These birds are often seen In the eastern half of the US, but they're also found along the California coast to Mexico. They're lovely birds, with a fierce demeanor when they want to come across that way!

A greeting card version of this can be found here: https://coreyartusimagery.com/products/red-shouldered-hawk-single-greeting-card

I do all my work in Procreate, stroke by stroke with my Apple Pencil. My work is #Humanmade, and never involves any form of artificial generative nonsense.

This image took 3856 strokes, and 2hr26min to complete. Here's the link to the speedpaint vid: https://makertube.net/w/tJt9tFLQWf1ipduX45aWbQ

A MoDo took a seat in the bowl to make sure it doesn't miss a refill. They are so funny, they always look like they learned how to properly pose and I also feel like I see them "making faces" somehow 😆. It is puffed up because of the cold but also to look impressive, as it probably sees a bird shape in the lens. #birds

FOR THE BIRDS

🐦‍⬛ Non-native trees are commonly used in urban settings, but a new study out of Sweden finds that native trees provide more resources and are preferred by urban birds.

🐛 Another study out of the University of Glasgow shows that common woodland birds produce more chicks when surrounded by a greater abundance of native tree foliage.

Urban birds prefer native trees, shows long-term study

Small passerine birds, such as blue and great tits, avoid breeding in urban areas where there are many non-native trees. Chicks also weigh less the more non-native trees there are in the vicinity of the nest. This is shown in a long-term study from Lund University in Sweden.

Extreme Weather Is Shrinking Baby Birds in a 60-Year Study

Sixty years of data show that cold snaps and heavy rain can stunt the growth of baby birds and reduce their survival chances. A study from the University of Oxford, published March 11, finds that sudden cold spells and heavy rain can slow growth and lower survival chances for young great tits in

We have our own version of these Indian Peafowl here in BC, but I don't believe I'd ever heard one before. In Sri Lanka I don't believe I went more than an hour without one. They are definitely as loud as they are flashy - without a doubt the most "look at me" birds I've ever met.
