A pair of black-throated loons have been nesting on a small island in the lake for years, but now for the first time a whooper swan has built its nest there. There is no other island on the lake and it is surrounded by popular nature trails. Where will they find a new nesting site or will they not nest this year?

Kuikkapariskunta – The black-throated Loon Couple
Kuikkien ääni yli tyynen järvenselän on yksi suomalaisten suosituimmista lintuäänistä. Kuikat ovat paikka- ja pariuskollisia, niin kuin monet pitkäikäiset lintulajit, ja ne viihtyvät rauhallisilla vesistöillä. Pesintöjä uhkaa mm. vesistöjen saastuminen, verkkokalastus, rantojen runsas mökkirakentaminen ja häiritsevä moottoriveneily. Suomessa pesii EU-alueen kuikista 60 %.

The call of black-throated loons over a calm lake is one of the most popular bird sounds among Finns. Loons are territorial and pair-bonded, like many long-lived bird species, and they thrive in calm waters. Nesting sites are threatened by, among other things, water pollution, net fishing, the extensive construction of cottages on the shores and disturbing motorboating. 60 % of the EU's loons breed in Finland.
