🔥 Member of the European Parliament Ondřej Krutílek (ECR Group in the European Parliament) tabled a parliamentary question asking the European Commission about the delayed evaluation report on the Body of European Regulators for Electronic Communications (BEREC) and the BEREC Office, initially due by 21 December 2023.
In her response, EC Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen now explains that the European Parliament and Council can expect the evaluation report to land in December 2025, alongside the report on the review of the European Electronic Communications Code (ECCC), which is set to be reviewed through the upcoming Digital Networks Act (DNA) regulation.
⁉️ The question on everyone’s lips: What fate awaits BEREC? Especially considering the Executive VP points to “simplification measures”.
🤐 The gossip: The delayed evaluation report and the upcoming DNA have the rumour mill spinning at full speed, with whispers that the EC might propose to replace BEREC with a centralised EU telecoms regulator.
😲 Concerned rumblings: The hearsay is starting to create a sense of worry, leading to support messages for BEREC’s survival. Bálint Sedlmayr (CISPE (Cloud Infrastructure Services Providers in Europe)), in a personal capacity, wrote a plea to EU Digital & Tech to do the “right thing” and not “kill” his favourite EU agency.
