#DigitalNetworksAct and #RouterFreedom

For more than a decade, the Free Software Foundation Europe has worked to protect #RouterFreedom in Europe.

The European Union is about to reform the telecom sector, and we call for a clear and harmonised approach that upholds the freedom of terminal equipment across all Member States.

"The #DigitalNetworksAct could have been a real opportunity to simplify EU rules. Instead, the Commission now risks doing the opposite – favouring the interests of outdated #telecom monopolies over European #consumers," emphasises @MTStecher.

The European Commission has released its first draft of the #DigitalNetworksAct, bringing long-standing concerns back into focus.

Our director of policy development and research, Carl Gahnberg, explains that the draft legislates solutions to non-existent problems, creates avenues for future intervention, and risks weakening net neutrality.

  • grensoverschrijdende dienstverlening vereenvoudigen, doordat aanbieders zich nog maar in 1 lidstaat hoeven te registreren om in de hele EU actief te zijn;
  • administratieve lasten verminderen, zodat meer ruimte ontstaat voor investeringen in netwerkuitbreiding en innovatie;
  • de beschikbaarheid van hoogwaardige connectiviteit, zoals glasvezel, 5G en satellietnetwerken, in heel Europa vergroten;
