Daniel Johnston – Yip / Jump Music (1983, US)

Continuing our journey through the epic Fedi-sourced catalogue of must-hear albums, our next spotlight is on number 660 on The List, submitted by platenworm. The album we look at here was one of Johnston’s self-recorded and self-distributed cassette albums, released nearly a decade before Kurt Cobain indirectly brought Johnston into the spotlight with his t-shirt featuring the artwork from Johnston’s next album of the same year, Hi, How Are You. The is the first of his albums to include chord organ, which adds to his already signature charming style. It also has the first appearance of "Casper the Friendly Ghost", which Johnston would rerecord a few times. 👻

Daniel Johnston – Yip / Jump Music (1983, US)

As randomly chosen via Fedi survey,[1] our next spotlight is on number 660 on The List, submitted by platenworm.

In my world, Daniel Johnston has long been a litmus test of sorts, and his name always causes me to pause. Like, if someone lists Johnston as a favourite, I automatically give them a mental tip of the hat. And any mention of him ultimately comes with a bunch of emotions and thoughts, as his story is at times so very joyful, and at others so very tragic.

The album we look at here was one of Johnston’s self-recorded and self-distributed cassette albums, released nearly a decade before Kurt Cobain indirectly brought Johnston into the spotlight with his t-shirt featuring the artwork from Johnston’s next album of the same year, Hi, How Are You (1983). The is the first of his albums to include chord organ, which adds to his already signature charming style. And I feel like I should be able to adequately describe just what that style is, seeing as his music seems fairly simple. But, I don’t know, I’m not really able to. Lo-fi, sure. Avant-pop, I guess. That barely captures the soul behind these songs though, the soul that shines through both the introspective tracks and the more comical even ridiculous ones. Good thing the point of this blog is simply to put an album/artist in your path that is worth your time to draw your own conclusions on.

So, if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of getting acquainted with Daniel Johnston and his music, this album is a great place to start. I’d also highly recommend tracking down the 2005 documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston. I saw it soon after it came out 20 years ago and bits of it have stuck with me since, a rarity given my shoddy memory. Daniel Johnston is just one of those people who, once you come across them, they’re hard to forget.

  • The survey choices that led to this spotlight were: “We gonna show you what to do”, “You put your foot down on the two”, “You jump up on the one”, and “Now you’re having fun”. The 3rd option was the winning selection, and so the survey result was translated as picking an album in The List that contained a word in the phrase – in this case, “jump”. ↩︎
