So, the consort system. I have thoughts.

So this is going to be short, since I plan on doing a blog with all of my thoughts. But just know I've been approaching it the wrong way. The consort system isn't there to choose a wife, but rather to choose a queen. If the king/prince's lover gets chosen, that's just a coincidence.

So I recently came across a few shorts about MaoMao from The Apothecary Diaries, and it made me realize something about the physical characteristics of my characters.

To understand what that is, I want to talk about something that often happened when I was in university. Whenever I interacted with guys, at some point conversations would turn to rating girls (usually my friends) on a scale of 1-10.

Have you ever tried to world build but the world doesn't really feel like being built? Yeah, that's me right now. With three different worlds.

Looking at how elves are viewed, I kinda understand why they're often written and extremely beautiful or predominantly female. It's definitely their thing.

I just realised I take constructive criticism better if you tell me why an idea is good or bad. Like I was recently talking to a friend about an idea I had for a character and they told me exactly why it was problematic. It was less anxiety inducing than when I was told my stories were good with no reason why.

Currently working on another harem story, and the age old question of immortal person falling in love with a child has come up. It's a weird thing I've never thought about, since I usually keep my characters around the same age (at least relative to their race). But when you start bringing in things like fairies and spirits, the lines start getting murky.

The way I approach character design for my animation and gamedev projects is different from how I approach it for my novels. With the former, I'm not just thinking about how they come across in writing, but also in their actions, demeanor, etc. When writing, while I do consider their looks, I'm more worried about how they communicate with others. It's like painting a picture Vs describing it.

A manga I'm currently reading is forcing me to reconsider and consolidate a few of the blog posts I've been working on.

Initially I was considering doing one on the hero role and noble obligation as well as Mary Sues/Gary Stus. But perception is throwing everything I was considering out the window

So I don't know if I'm the only writer who does this (or at least the only male writer), but every time I design a female character, I always take into consideration their bust size. Yeah I might not disclose it in writing (unless I do smut/erotica), but it does impact how things like how they dress and how they show off. Like some clothes and actions don't work on certain body types.

As a writer, there is an assumption that if your character (especially female) is considered attractive, then it's because of sexual reasons. Doubly so if the character is a busty female. It goes hand in hand with how women with smaller cups (especially if they're short) are considered child-like. And no, I'm not talking loli. But I guess that's just an effect of society.

Just something I thought about with a new character I was working on.
