On this day in 2017 I was in Perth, Western Australia. In the late afternoon I watched The Australind arrive at Perth station, then in the evening I went to East Perth for the arrival of The Prospector.

The Australind is a narrow gauge (1067mm) train that runs from Perth to Bunbury. The service is currently suspended due to major works on the Armadale suburban line (which forms part of the Australind route). The service is expected to resume in mid 2025, with new railcars replacing the ADP/ADQ set shown.

The Prospector is a Standard Gauge train that runs east from Perth to Kalgoorlie. The 653 km journey takes just under 7 hours.

Australind Farewell

In November 2023, The ADP/ADQ class railcars made their final journey on the Perth - Bunbury Australind service. This service will be susupended until late 2025 due to major trackworks. In 2025, new Alstom built DMUs will enter service on this line. I travelled on the ADP/ADQ class railcars in their last week of service.

Stalked the Australind again this morning, and took a few final photos.

The first picture is the Perth bound service approaching Burswood.

The second two shots are the Bunbury bound service crossing the Windan bridge, taken from the Matagarup footbridge.

Back in Perth after a very enjoyable trip to Bunbury. So glad I got to ride on these railcars before it was too late.

The Australind at Bunbury Passenger Terminal, ready to run the 14:45 service back to Perth.

These two cars are the only available Australind railcars remaining, with the spare ADP driving car and all three ADQ trailers unserviceable. The class will be retired after the last service on Friday, with new railcars to be introduced when the line reopens in 2025.
