Perun returned!
I can say I feared lighting strikes and thunder in the past. But when my worldview become closer to animism and polytheism it all changed. My first thought on first thunderstorm of 2026 was "Perun came back!". Yes, in this joyful manner. I understand that people in old times feared thunderstorms. And Perun likely had some grim reputation, which produced sincretism of Perun into orthodox Ilija the Prophet. But for me the first thunderstorm of the year means different thing. I see #animism as a spiritual interpretation of the basic act of showing respect for the world surrounding you. It’s a really simple idea, but if you’re conditioned to respect the world surrounding you – things like treating the Earth with kindness (God’s concession) or treating others like you’d treat yourself, fall out of the idea by default without any large slab of theory and rule-setting.
I first stumbled on this practice when learning about Shinto and it’s been with me in smoe form ever since.
