"An epic fantasy without needing to be a trilogy. Every character is superbly written and I was totally invested in every one of them.... I gave this book 5 stars - I loved it to bits and I can see it being a constant reread in the future."

Those of you voting for chrysotile in the first round of the Mineral Cup 2025 may be interested in a fantasy novel in which asbestos - amiant, as it used to be known - plays a historic, symbolic, and legendary role: Amiant Soul.
(Those of you voting for pectolite are also welcome to take a look.)

"I came up with a jerk, practically nose to nose with this giant. Nose to collarbone, anyway. There was an unpleasant clammy sinking feeling at my belly, which might have been fear but was actually the fish sliding out from under my kamis.
We both looked down at it lying open-mouthed in the dust. There wasn't the shadow of a laugh, which worried me. People round here will laugh if their own grandmother falls flat on her face. A freak like me giving birth to a fish should have had them doubled up for days."

"It was the first chill night in autumn, the night the dying man came in."
It's a year today since I published Amiant Soul (right around the autumn equinox here in the Southern Hemisphere).

Have you read a great sci-fi, fantasy, or horror work by a Kiwi or NZ resident recently? One published in 2024?

If so, consider nominating the work for the 2025 Sir Julius Vogel awards. (Anyone can nominate, you don't have to be in or from NZ.)

If not, it's not too late! Amiant Soul meets the criteria and can be bought at a price of your choosing here:

"There didn't seem to be much point, with things the way they were, but you don't just lie down in the desert and wait to die. You keep going down the road ahead of you, even if you know the end that's waiting for you. You don't know why you keep going. You just do."

A SPFBO judge reviewed Amiant Soul as "An epic fantasy without needing to be a trilogy. Every character is superbly written and I was totally invested in every one of them.... I gave this book 5 stars - I loved it to bits and I can see it being a constant reread in the future."
Unfortunately that judge wasn't the judge who had Amiant Soul in their batch, and it's out of the running.
Best of luck to all the SPFBOX books - may they each find their readers, winner or not.

"It was the first chill night in autumn, the night the dying man came in."
The first line of Amiant Soul, released around the autumn equinox here in the Southern Hemisphere.
Now that the Northern Hemisphere has reached the autumnal equinox, how about some seasonal reading for those of you on that side of the planet?

Someone on Facebook asked where they could find the eBook of Amiant Soul.
The three answers they got were:
a) it's on Kobo, but not Amazon (true)
b) it doesn't exist (false)
c) it's only available at https://deborah.makarios.nz/amiant-soul/ (partially true. It is available there, but also in other places, excluding Amazon - though mobi for Kindle does exist, and is available).
Tbh I find it a bit depressing how quick some people are to assume that Amazon is the sole arbiter of existence for ebooks.

First line of Amiant Soul - published in March, but the WIP is as yet too unformed to have a first line.
