In other news I'd been wondering about @alissaazar perspective on the new regional conflict and am saddened to hear that the conflict is impacting people in our local journalism community.

Israel issued evacuation orders for ALL of southern Lebanon. They continue to forcefully displace large amounts of people, destroying the land, and carry on endless murders. Israel never even stopped bombing Jnoub/ southern Lebanon since the supposed "ceasefire" and now they are attempting to destroy as much of the country as they can. Meanwhile the da3esh forces that many "leftists" in the west cheered on despite what many Syrians and SWANA minorities were saying and explaining are supporting Israel against Lebanon.

“Stephanie Sugars, a senior reporter for the Press Freedom Tracker, explained that Azar’s position as an independent journalist likely contributes to her vulnerability and repeated targeting.

‘Independent [journalists] are significantly more at risk because they don’t have the reputational protection of a very formal-looking New York Times press credential,’ Sugars told Prism.”

The corporate media presents a much different take. We're in a bubble. This is what the rest of the world sees. Feel free to tell the DM why the way they're doing this whole news thing is just plain wrong:

Today, our dear friend Alissa was sentenced to be confined in jail for 14 days and to serve 36 months of supervised probation for one count of felony riot.

We believe this to be an absolutely harrowing act of political repression with the intent to silence her voice and discredit her journalism. This is evident to us by the prosecution’s recommendation, which was thankfully denied, that her residence, vehicle and electronics be subject to search and seizure without a warrant. Special terms were, however, included in her probation which takes away her ability to wear a protective vest as many journalists covering conflicts do. It is not a crime to be antifascist and, as the jury found, it is not a crime to defend yourself and your property. We want justice for Alissa, but we need your support to get there. Right now, the best way to help is by donating to her legal fund and sending money to her trust/commissary. Here’s how! Clackamas County Jail uses a service called GettingOut. You can create your own account at https://www.gettingout.com/ and deposit into her account directly if you wish. You will need to use your legal name and personal information to do this. You can also venmo @/pdxsfund. All money received will go to making sure her commissary has funds as well as assist after her release with transitional housing and further legal expenses. You can also donate by credit card through the Donorbox fundraiser at https://donorbox.org/help-alissa-get-proper-legal-defense. Purchasing a T-shirt from https://bridge-city.printify.me/products also supports Alissa. Thank you to everyone who has supported Alissa. We will continue to post updates on IG and Mastodon. "During Azar’s trial, the state has attempted to paint her mere presence at this event — even though she was clearly a journalist — as “participating in the riot, and her personal political ideologies as an antifascist as evidence to justify the charges levied against her

The importance of free press to a democratic society has never been clearer as we witness the chilling effect on imposing criminal liability for journalists who risk their personal safety to cover highly controversial events."
