THE LESSON erzählt im Prinzip drei Geschichten, aber keine davon sonderlich gut: eine ideengeschichtliche Betrachtung der Kunst, das Familientrauma nach dem Suizid eines Sohnes und eine – die meiner Meinung nach interessanteste der drei – über Klasse. Die Familie der Sinclairs lässt den Protagonisten seinen ihm zugewiesenen Platz im Haus und implizit der Gesellschaft durch zahlreiche Mikroaggressionen spüren. Sie führen ihn etwa vor, wenn es um Wein geht oder lassen ihn seine vermeintliche Unkultiviertheit mit gezielt bloßstellenden Fragen über Rachmaninow spüren.
