„Apple’s terrible UI design is not the fault of just one fall guy“

I totally agree. Things went a bit too far, said the Apple Fan Community.

Alan Dye is just one person, but for some reason, he became the personification of everything people dislike in this $3 trillion corporate company with 170k employees. Things that got said became really personal.

Q1. Did software quality decrease more under Ive or Dye? (think in terms of rate of decrease, not in total quality)

🎨🧠 Gruber's latest masterpiece: a riveting novella about Alan Dye's hair color, artfully disguised as an insightful analysis of corporate musical chairs. Spoiler alert: Apple isn't shedding a tear, and Gruber's #sarcasm levels are off the charts. 🍏👋

Bad Dye Job

It might have made some sense to bring someone from the fashion/brand world to lead software design for Apple Watch, but it sure didn’t seem to make sense for the rest of Apple’s platforms. And the decade of Dye’s HI leadership has proven it.

macOS Tahoe has almost completely ruined the typography palette, which is sad because it was SO IMPROVED in Sequoia, as @nickheer noted last year: https://c.im/@nickheer/112111864231807304

Dang, @gruber, tell us what you really think! 😳

“So it’s not just that Alan Dye jumped ship from Apple for the chief designer officer role at another company.1 It’s not just that he left for a rival company. It’s that he left Apple for Meta, of all companies. Given what Cook has said about Meta publicly, one can only imagine what he thinks about them privately.”

Alan Dye Was in Tim Cook’s Blind Spot

How could someone who would even *consider* leaving Apple for Meta rise to a level of such prominence at Apple, including as one of the few public faces of the company?

There’s a *lot* of talk about how great it is that Alan Dye has left Apple. I agree: UI design has been a disaster under Dye. Liquid Glass on the Mac in particular is a train wreck.

But as I’ve said before, OS X Lion was when the Mac UI began to go downhill. Reduced contrast, full screen mode on maximise, the death of Save As in favour of the useless Duplicate … the UI decay began long ago.

As with macOS Tahoe, there were lots of great technical improvements. But for users, especially novice users, it was a backward step followed by further backward steps.

Let’s hope that starts to reverse, and quickly.
