Someone posted about the 50th anniversary of Donald Johanson’s discovery of Lucy, and I went on an hour long excursion into the memory vault.

I was a first year geology major at podunk college and my then girlfriend and soon to find out at the time, a creationist-leaning Bible thumper, was heading the group that brought lecturers and musicians, etc. to the campus.

So I found myself having a pre-lecture meal with the world’s preeminent anthropologist…
I can’t imagine (nor remember) anything said at the dinner…but was glad for the opportunity.

Wish I could have that opportunity to do over now, actually knowing some things about the topic…though honestly, Inprobably knew as much about early hominids then as I do know.

I found all this stuff tucked in my signed copy of his book this morning and I am feeling a bit of time warp on so many levels.

System after system falls
Like old growth trees standing
In habitats no longer suitable
Waves radiate from their landing

When they look back at us
From whatever it is that remains
Will they say they could have, should have, done more
All they did was stay in their lanes

Power and comfort for some
All that is really sought
Eking existence for the masses
Are we really so easily bought

Opportunities waning
Remedies come at a cost
The ability to overcome
Once possible, now lost

Like hours whiled away waiting

For a time to come that has already passed

Certainty a luxury of the past

Fate intertwined with a planet ailing
