There were so many great films at #NAFF. Of the 28 offered I managed to see 22! If you are in the NYC area Film at Lincoln Center's African Film Fest is May 6-12th. Toronto Intl Film Fest #TIFF also shows some African films (Sept). There's also the Toronto Black Film Fest and next years Pan African Film Fest in Los Angeles (Feb). Check around. You might be able to catch some where you are.

It's been a while since I posted #MusicFromTheMotherland but there were some great soundtracks in the various films at the festival. Last night I saw COTTON QUEEN about a Sudanese woman and her fight to preserve natural cotton versus GMA seed, among other issues. Artist Amira Kheir is featured on the soundtrack. This decline…leaves the US’ level of academic freedom just below that of Mozambique (0.41) and just above Thailand (0.38), where the law of llèse-majesté, forbidding insult of the monarchy, is the strictest in the world."

Last night at #NAFF we saw So. Africa's entry for Oscar Foreign film called THE HEART IS A MUSCLE. It's a story of 3 father/son groupings whose lives collide over the course of growing up. Can the privileged son of a violent father break from that violence for the benefit of his own son and to help the a man who suffered at his hands when he was younger. Also saw an art film on five residents of KHARTOUM and how they are surviving the conflict in Sudan.

To lighten the mood we saw a comedy called THE FISHERMAN which was also about generational change and the struggle to adapt traditional ways to modern times. A magical talking fish is involved! Then back to serious DIYA is about the conflicts that the traditional practice of paying blood money for an accidental death can cause. Striking film. Not at all what I expected. If you are a fan of film festivals, try to find some of these near you. 3/3

WHEN NIGERIA HAPPENS also includes a story of the dilemma younger people face when caring for an elderly parent is involved. Here a group of twenty somethings dancers dream of making it as internet influencers. The harsh reality of the need for $ to care for a parent with dementia produces some tragic consequences as the troupe learns reality doesn't always yield to your dreams. This story could have taken place in any poor community any where. 2/3

Here's an idea of what's been playing at #NAFF. The Moroccan selection for the Oscars is CALLE MALAGA - a film about the descendants of Spaniards who fled to Morocco when Franco ran Spain. The main character is an 80 year old women born and raised in Tangiers. Her daughter shows up out of the blue and demands the mother move to Madrid as the daughter is selling the mom's flat! It's a story of resilience and the fight for dignity among the elderly. 1/3
