I believe it’s due to the thoughtful UI/UX lending itself to a low-friction workflow, but also just how optimized and fast it actually is as a fully native macOS app can’t be undersold.

As much as I am skeptical of Canva ownership longterm, the new Affinity Studio is quite solid even with a free account. I have hope they won't enshittify or force you to train AI.
As an Affinity v2 user it hasn't taken long for me to feel at home in Studio. Rolling an entire design suite into 1 app is impressive and makes a lot of sense.
I also use Sketch, Figma, Penpot, Procreate, and Pixelmator Pro (hope Apple doesn't ruin) depending on the task for my anti-Adobe workflow.

Canva making Affinity Studio free makes collaboration and co-design sooo much easier now. At the end of last year I did my first proper project using Affinity Studio and provided my client with the full design files at regular intervals. When a small copy change was needed, a few hours before a social media post went live, it was easily done by my client. They was no waiting for hours or even days for me to have the time to make the change, they could do it themselves, because we both had access to the same software.
Yes there is of course potential for things to go badly wrong when clients are given access to design files, I know from first hand experience! but if there is trust in a relationship then problems can be managed. There are also issues with font and image licences but nothing a quick Zoom meeting and a signature can’t cover. For me, sharing design files with clients is a game changer.
This isn’t going to be desirable on every project or help every client and but for many it will be super useful. Now that my clients can, for free, download Affinity Studio I will be giving more of them the option for collaborating in this way. Some will take it and some will not but the option is now there.
Affinity is very intuitive and Ritson the integrated AI agent is better than anything I have used before, so this will flatten the learning curve for many. I am now hoping Affinity Studio will make the .AF file type into a more open standard like .PDF and there can be even more collaboration as it becomes a useful open standard other companies can build on. And of course we need a proper Linux version too with no sign-in required 🙂

CeceliaFor folks using Affinity Publisher 2 or later, a similar workflow is available for setting styles that have roles attached. Alt text for images can be set in the Tags panel.
Reading order can be set with the Reading Order panel. You’ll need to select Tagged PDF when exporting the PDF (it’s not the default for Affinity Publisher 2).
