Sometimes I wonder how the first airplane pilots and passengers felt when they laid eyes on a cloudscape that was, impossibly, below them. It’s easy to become numb to the routine of a plane trip these days, but every time I look out a window I’m reminded of what someone once said: “You’re sitting in a chair… IN THE SKY.”

Took this photo while flying over Utah’s Great Salt Lake. Its deep red color is caused by pigments produced by halophilic (salt-loving) bacteria, which thrive in the lake’s extremely high salinity levels.
